A Resolution of the Urban County Council, affirming and adopting the Charter for Compassion for Lexington-Fayette County and designating Lexington-Fayette County as a Compassionate City. [Council Office, Maynard]

Summary

Body

WHEREAS, Lexington-Fayette County contains a broad diversity of people and organizations embodying compassion and the best of human values; and

WHEREAS, a growing international network of local governments, individuals, and groups organized around compassion are empowering their communities to provide human services and meet needs; and

Whereas, Lexington-Fayette County will work across cultures and differences to encourage trust and respect in our community; and

Whereas, Lexington-Fayette County recognizes it has a strong volunteer spirit and will work to rally our community around compassionate action projects; and

WHEREAS, as part of a Campaign for Compassionate Cities there will be opportunities to connect organizations that need resources and volunteers with community members who can assist them; and

WHEREAS, the U.S. Conference of Mayors passed a Resolution in June 2013 to endorse the Campaign for Compassionate Cities; and

WHEREAS, today, over 50 countries and 70 cities, including Louisville, which was named as a model Compassionate City for the past four years, have affirmed the Charter for Compassion and are committed to an action plan; and

WHEREAS, since November 2015, an active group of Lexington citizens, with backgrounds in medical and mental health services, education, business, interfaith relations, fine arts, emergency/first response, social and aging services, and government, have been meeting to garner support for adoption of the Charter of Compassion by Lexington-Fayette County; and

WHEREAS, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government wishes to encourage the citizens of Lexington to unite in a commitment to compassion and to live compassionately.

                                          NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE LEXINGTON-FAYETTE URBAN COUNTY GOVERNMENT

 

Section 1 - That the Urban County Council of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government affirms and adopts the Charter for Compassion, which is attached hereto.

Section 2 - That Lexington-Fayette County, is hereby designated as  Compassionate Lexington, a compassionate city.

Section 3 - That this Resolution shall become effective on the date of its passage.
