Summary
Body
WHEREAS, an average of approximately 100,000 people are shot each year in the United States; and
WHEREAS, over 18,000 American children and teens are injured or killed each year due to gun violence.; and
WHEREAS, in 2014, Kentucky had the 15th highest number of gun deaths per capita among the states with 627 deaths attributed to gunshot wounds; and WHEREAS, since the enactment of the 1994 Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act (Brady Law) through December 31, 2012, background checks have blocked more than 2.4 million prohibited purchasers nationwide (i.e. domestic abusers, convicted felons, mentally ill persons, and other dangerous individuals) from purchasing a Firearm or receiving a permit to purchase or carry a Firearm; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to KRS 237.110, the Department of Kentucky State Police is currently authorized to issue and renew licenses to carry concealed Firearms or other deadly weapons, or a combination thereof, to qualified persons; and
WHEREAS, the Kentucky Carrying Concealed Deadly Weapons (CCDW) licensure requirements, including the successful completion of safety and training courses, are necessary public safety protections.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE LEXINGTON-FAYETTE URBAN COUNTY GOVERNMENT:
