A Resolution expressing the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council's support for the adoption of H.R. 2570 the "Valley View Ferry Preservation Act of 2013". [Council Office, Maynard]
Body
WHEREAS, the Valley View Ferry is an important transportation option in Central Kentucky and carries over 8,000 passengers a month; and
WHEREAS, the Valley View Ferry has a long history and is one of the oldest businesses in the Commonwealth of Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, the Counties of Jessamine and Madison and the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government jointly formed the Valley View Ferry Authority to operate the Ferry; and
WHEREAS, the Kentucky River is defined as a "navigable river", even though the United States Army Corps of Engineers has closed the locks on dams 5-14; and
WHEREAS, the Valley View Ferry is operated along guide wires between the departure and arrival points; and
WHEREAS, the United States Coast Guard has very stringent requirements for the operation of ferries on navigable rivers; and
WHEREAS, the Valley View Ferry has reduced its operating hours because it cannot find adequate employees meeting the necessary Coast Guard licensing; and
WHEREAS, United States Congressman Andy Barr, representing the 6th District of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, has introduced H.R. 2570 the "Valley View Preservation Act of 2013", which would reduce the licensing requirements for guided- wire ferries; and
WHEREAS, the Urban County Council of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government wants to make known its support for H.R. 2570.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE LEXINGTON-FAYETTE URBAN COUNTY GOVERNMENT:
Section 1 - That the Preamble to this Resolution be and hereby is incorporated by reference as if fully set out herein.
Section 2 - That the Council of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government hereby requests that the United States Congress strongly consider adopting H.R. 2570 the "Valley View Preservation Act of 2013".
