WHEREAS, Henry A. Tandy was a civic leader, tradesman, and entrepreneur who, though born into slavery, rose to local prominence in Lexington, Kentucky, around the turn of the 20th Century; and,
WHEREAS, Henry A. Tandy co-founded Tandy & Byrd Contractors, one of the leading contracting firms in Lexington in the latter half of the 19th Century, which performed the original brick work for the recently renovated Historic Lexington Courthouse, which stands adjacent to the park; and,
WHEREAS, Henry A. Tandy’s lifetime of civic engagement, through such organizations as the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the Freemasons, and the United Brothers of Friendship and Sisters of the Mysterious Ten, may serve as an inspiration to all; and,
WHEREAS, the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board has reviewed the proposed renaming of Cheapside Park in honor of Henry A. Tandy, and has unanimously supported the same;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE LEXINGTON-FAYETTE URBAN COUNTY GOVERNMENT:
Section 1 - That, the property located at 251 West Main Street, previously known as Cheapside Park, be and hereby is renamed Henry A. Tandy Centennial Park
Section 2 - That this Resolution shall become effective on the date of its passage.
