Title

WHEREAS, Mayor Linda Gorton has made racial justice and equality a focus of her tenure;
WHEREAS, Mayor Linda Gorton founded the Commission on Racial Justice & Equity to develop recommendations from members of the community to address racial inequality in Lexington;
WHEREAS, one of the Commission's top recommendations was to expand early childhood education for children in schools with very low student performance;
WHEREAS, William Wells Brown has a student body that is predominantly African-American and the school has been designated as a Comprehensive Support and Improvement school in Lexington due to very low student performance;
WHEREAS, the Community Action Council ("CAC") desires to acquire land and build a facility to offer early childhood education and family support services for three-year-old children in the William Wells Brown district who are not otherwise eligible for preschool;
WHEREAS, the CAC's proposed project would also help fulfill the recommendation of the Mayor's Commission on Racial Justice & Equity;
WHEREAS, the Mayor desires to propose the acquisition and construction of this facility for funding through the FY 2022 federal appropriations process;
WHEREAS, the FY 2022 Appropriations Community Project Funding Interest Form encourages Resolutions from local governments showing support for projects proposed for funding.
