WHEREAS, Pam Miller served the City of Lexington for 25 years, 15 as a member of the Urban-County Council, including 5 years as Vice Mayor, and 10 as Mayor; and
WHEREAS, as the first woman to serve on Lexington’s Urban County Council, as Vice Mayor and as Mayor, Pam Miller broke through glass ceilings in Lexington and became a role model for young people, especially thousands of young women who had never seen a woman in public office; and
WHEREAS, Pam Miller changed the face of our city through her role in starting the Lexington Farmer’s Market, the Children’s Museum, and the Rosie recycling program; saving the Kentucky and State Theatres; passing the Fairness Ordinance; creating the Purchase of Development Rights land preservation program; expanding Lexington Center and improving Rupp Arena; establishing the City’s Rainy Day Fund; and founding Partners for Youth, among many other initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Pam Miller is a life-long supporter of the arts, financially and through her attendance, has raised thousands for local arts organizations, and was presented with the prestigious Governor’s Award in the Arts for Government in 2000 in recognition of her significant support of the arts through government action; and
WHEREAS, the Parks Advisory Board, at its meeting on March 13, 2017, voted in favor of renaming the Downtown Arts Center the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE LEXINGTON-FAYETTE URBAN COUNTY GOVERNMENT:
Section 1 - That the Downtown Arts Center, located at 139, 141, and 143 East Main Street, be and hereby is renamed the Pam Miller Downtown Arts Center.
Section 2 - That this Resolution shall become effective on the date of its passage.
