Summary

Body

                     WHEREAS, the sister city concept was inaugurated by the President of the United States of America in 1956 to establish greater friendship and understanding between the people of the United States and other nations through the medium of direct personal contact; and,

                     WHEREAS, to implement this program, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government and other communities in the United States of America have been requested by Sister Cities International to affiliate with cities in other nations of similar characteristics and mutual interests; and,

                     WHEREAS, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government, through its Council, does recognize and endorse this program with the hope that it will lead to a lasting friendship between the people of Lexington-Fayette County and Jerez de la Frontera, Spain; and,

                     WHEREAS, the Board of Directors of Lexington Sister Cities Programs, Inc., has gathered together a group of citizens that are committed to establishing cultural, educational, professional, and social activities in cooperation with the people of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain;

                     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE LEXINGTON-FAYETTE URBAN COUNTY GOVERNMENT:

                     Section 1 - That the Council, on behalf of the people of Lexington-Fayette County, does hereby extend an invitation to the government and the people of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, to become a sister city of Lexington-Fayette County for the purpose of creating greater mutual understanding, appreciation, and respect between the peoples of our two great cities and nations.

Section 2 - That the Mayor be and hereby is authorized to act as the official representative of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government to carry out this program.

Section 3 - That the Clerk of the Council of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government be and hereby is authorized to send a copy of this resolution to the Mayor and Council of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain, Sister Cities International in Washington, D.C., the Embassy of Spain in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Embassy Madrid in Madrid, Spain.  

                     Section 4 - That this Resolution shall become effective on the date of its passage.
