WHEREAS, Lexington has continually demonstrated concern for and interest in the welfare of its tree canopy resulting in the designation of Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation for 30 years, longer than any other Kentucky community; and
WHEREAS, bur oak is a species indigenous to Kentucky and an important part of Lexington’s urban forest; and
WHEREAS, over weeks of polling, survey participants resoundingly found bur oak to be the best representative tree species for Lexington’s official tree; and
WHEREAS, designating bur oak as Lexington’s official tree will raise awareness and encourage planting, conservation and preservation of this tree species;
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE LEXINGTON-FAYETTE URBAN COUNTY GOVERNMENT:
Section 1 - That bur oak shall now and henceforth be the official tree of Lexington, Kentucky.
Section 2 - That this Resolution shall become effective on the date of its passage.
