Rebranding of Day Treatment Center
Body
WHEREAS, the late Audrey Louise Ross Grevious was born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1930 and attended the segregated Constitution Elementary, Dunbar Junior, and Dunbar High Schools; and
WHEREAS, Audrey Grevious attended Kentucky State University, graduating with a degree in Elementary Education in 1957; and
WHEREAS, Audrey Grevious was an educator that believed in equitable instruction for all students. She was employed as a teacher and head principal at the Kentucky Village Reform School, a school for delinquent youths and continued her career as an educator in Fayette County Public Schools, until her retirement; and
WHEREAS, Audrey Grevious fearlessly confronted oppression and inequality for African-Americans, she was responsible for organizing numerous non-violent protests and sit-ins during the 1960's Civil Rights movement and served as the President of the Lexington chapter of the NAACP and Vice-President of the local chapter of the Congress on Racial Equality (CORE); and
WHEREAS, in 2012, Audrey Grevious was inducted into the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, the LFUCG Division of Youth Services operates a Day Treatment Center for local teens, in partnership with Fayette County Public Schools and Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE LEXINGTON-FAYETTE URBAN COUNTY GOVERNMENT:
Section 1 - That the Lexington Day Treatment Center, located at 1177 Harry Sykes Way, be and hereby is renamed the Audrey Grevious Center.
Section 2 - That this Resolution shall become effective on the date of its passage.
